Anyone know how to get a web cam going at the park? So people outside of Syracuse can "tune in"?

Perhaps the Post Standard will put one up, or some other sponsoring organization?

Anyone have any ideas or thoughts about this?

Wildlife Sightings

Tuesday, April 15th between 2 and 3 pm in the afternoon, I spotted the following:

(2) Two wild turkey, across the overpass above Geddes St. from the Lipe Art Park, in the brush and small trees located on the other side. Quickly disappeared into the understory.

(1) One Pheasant which I can't identify. It certainly did not seem to be the common ring-necked variety we see mostly around these parts as it had a very bright red ring going most of the way around it's neck. Walked the length of the park staying ahead of me, then when it got itself into a corner, flew up and over the railroad tracks.

Spring 2008

I have heard scant rumours that a Spring Show/Event is taking place at Lipe Art Park. Is this true? If so, details anyone?

Also, if there is going to be any exhibits/shows for spring summer, NOW is the time to start preparing for them...

In my opinion, something should be happening at that park in every season, something visual at the very least...

I love the idea of going large, but continuing small "things" in the park will hold interest until larger scale projects take place...

Thoughts? Verifications?

Lipe Art Park Installation in 3D on Google Earth

I would like to build the park in 3D on Google Earth and have a 3D "virtual" sculpture installation at Lipe Art Park on Google Earth. It would be easy way for people from all over the world to visit and see what we are up to!!

I thought it might be a good way to raise money for the park. Also it surely will be good press for the park and the artists that show their work in it!!

Does anyone have some ideas on how we could make this work and what it would involve??

How to invite people to the group site.

You can invite people by:

Going to the front summary page,

Scrolling down below the text until you see: "Help to grow this group by inviting others to join » "

Then just copy and past emails in to the box of people that you think would be interested in the Lipe Art Park.

You can personalize the invite if you like.

Then you can invite who ever and as many people as you want. =)

I set it up so that the group site is fully public, this way there is total transparency.

Anyone can give there input or discuss what ever they want, or if they wish to do neither of those things, at least being a member of the site shows support for the park. =)

Time to start growing this baby!

Installations: Links and Ideas

Let this be a place to post links and share ideas.

Installations can play upon more than just the visual element. They can be passive, interactive or have aspects of both. I find those that incorporate environmentally generated movement and sound to be particularly memorable.

Here are a few that instantly spring from my memory

One of the masters of sound installation:

http://www.janney.com/

A fun concept for the walking path:

http://www.bostonharborwalk.com/art/location.php?nid=4&sid=23

Something interactive:

http://www.jaeminlee.net/works/cw/morecw.html

Who, what, why, when, where, how?

Also in the process of being completed by Denis out of collective group meetings, is another document covering:

What is Lipe Art Park?

What/who is "the community"?

What is Friends of Lipe Art Park (FLAP)?

What are the key principles by which FLAP will operate?

What are FLAP's near-term, general objectives?

That's coming soon.

Organizing shows, events, installations, etc. Packet

Since last year a small group of people have been meeting in order to help keep things going and trying to move the LAP forward. One of those steps included developing a simple "Lipe Art Park Event/Exhibition Packet" to give to people interested in organizing shows, events, installations, etc. at the park. After many group discussions, Dennis (one of the artists/curators from Agriculture "Farm to City" installation last Fall) and Rick have put together a packet and are in the process of tweaking and finishing it up.

Do not fear, we're making it as simple as possible, but not simpler than that.

It's coming from Rick's perspective that, Rick hates when people make things complicated, and Dennis's perspective of "I wish we had this packet when we did the show last fall". =) It just helps people think their way through the process of curating something at the park.

Packet soon to be posted.

ESF and landscape design

ESF is currently in the process of creating conceptual landscape designs for Lipe Art Park as if it was to be a finished art park. But don't get too excited yet, these are "students" that are using LAP as a class project. Will it go beyond that? I don't know, but at least the interest is there. They will be having there final class presentations soon. I am not sure of the availability of seating, but I will talk to the teacher and see if we can have some of the concepts posted to this group site. They have some good idea's together, it should be interesting to see what they come up with and help give people a better idea of what the park can be!!

It has been a long Winter and I know it hasn't looked like much has been going on at the park, but people are still working on planning events and trying to figure out ways to make the park more sustainable. Oh yeah, now you are one of those people! =)

Feel free to not just join in the conversations, but to make up some conversations!! This isn't a site with one webmaster, this is a site that gets created by what it's members make of it for the purpose of creating a collective vision and reality for Lipe Art Park. Above all else, make sure you have fun!!

Development

Great cities are Cultural Laboratories, great cities give pleasure to their people in contemporary and urban terms.

Economic Development is on the radar in Central New York and comes as "the answer" to most everyone working in revitalization efforts. Most new projects and developments come into fruition with the intention of bettering or furthering the region's "economic development" status, with the belief that developing economically will result in a better future for the City of Syracuse and its surrounding areas.

But it is important that we begin looking at other factors in the revitalization of the area, and Lipe Art Park can be a vehicle for these kinds of public discussions, and the forefront of sustainability in the region, and possibly the world. It takes looking outside of the neighborhood, outside of the City, and outside of the region to bring this project to a global scale.

Beyond "Economic Development" what Social and Ecological developmental aspects can Lipe Art Park begin to explore and encompass within its grassy boundaries? Perhaps this can be answered with the types of sculpture/art that is presented, the theme of shows that take place there, or even new and innovative ideas that Lipe Art Park can introduce to the world, as a sculpture park and an outdoor center of ideas, culture and creativity.

Here at the beginning, I believe that the following issues are key in the development and sustainability of Lipe Art Park:

- to promote artistic activity through the creation of new and original artworks

-to develop and promote a high quality and well designed environment, valued by those who live, work, and visit the Warehouse District

-to promote participation and involvement in the arts and our environment

Thoughts? Ideas?
